The Department of Mechanical Engineering, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka came into being in 2006 as a result of the splitting of the Department of Mechanical/Production Engineering into the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Department of Industrial/Production Engineering. It is worthy to state that the Department of Mechanical/Production Engineering has been in existence since July 1981 in the defunct Anambra State University of Technology (ASUTECH). However, following the creation of State, the then Awka Campus of ASUTECH was made a full fledged University and in November, 21 1991 was renamed Nnamdi Azikiwe University. This University was taken over by the Federal Government on September 1, 1992.
From the outset, the Department, had a clear vision, clear aim and objectives as an engineering degree-awarding department, and clearly reflected this in the Departmental curriculum, aim and objectives. This was probably so because the founding academic staff of the Department were well qualified, highly motivated and experienced.
